The Power of Community: What One Evening Reminded Me About Fundraising

This past Saturday night, I attended my first Salud!, the annual fundraising celebration for Escuela de Guadalupe in DenveAnd what an evening it was.

The room was filled with energy, generosity, and people who clearly believe in what this remarkable school is doing.

Escuela de Guadalupe provides an academically excellent, bilingual Catholic education that prepares the next generation of community leaders. Throughout the evening, we heard powerful stories about the impact of that mission on students and families. But something else struck me.

This wasn't simply a room full of people attending a fundraising event. It was a community coming together around something they believe in.

And that's an important distinction.

Fundraising Is About More Than the Ask

After more than 30 years in fundraising, one thing I know for sure is that people want to be part of something meaningful.

They want to feel connected to a mission, to the people whose lives are being changed, and to others who share their belief in what's possible.

The most successful fundraising experiences create opportunities for all three.

They help people understand not just what an organization does, but why it matters.

They create a sense of belonging. And they invite people to see themselves as part of the story.

The Power of Bringing People Together

What I appreciated about Salud! was the way the evening brought Escuela's community together.

There was joy and celebration, but there was also a powerful reminder of why everyone had gathered. That's what a great fundraising event can accomplish.

It can deepen relationships, reinforce a shared commitment, and remind people that their generosity is part of something bigger.

And the real opportunity doesn't end when the evening is over.

It's in what happens next—how organizations continue those conversations, strengthen those connections, and help people stay engaged with the mission.

Connection Is the Beginning

Fundraising is often measured in dollars raised, and understandably so.

But some of its most important outcomes are harder to measure: a new relationship, a deeper understanding of the mission, a renewed commitment, or someone deciding they want to become more involved.

Those moments matter.

Because when people feel genuinely connected to a cause and to one another, generosity becomes more than a transaction.

It becomes an expression of belonging.

And Saturday night was a wonderful reminder of just how powerful that can be.

Congratulations to the entire Escuela de Guadalupe community on a remarkable Salud! celebration.
